Oncology – Cancer Center

Oncology is the field of medicine devoted to the diagnosis, treatment and management of cancer. Comprehensive cancer treatment includes:

Medical Oncology
Medical oncology involves treating cancer through medication, chemotherapy and biologic treatments.

Radiation Oncology
Radiation therapy is a cancer treatment that uses high doses of radiation to kill cancer cells and stop them from spreading. The radiation used for cancer treatments is a much higher dose compared to the radiation used for traditional x-rays to image parts of the body.

Radiation can be an external beam, in which a linear accelerator aims radiation at the body in the location where the cancer cells are. Or, internal radiation, a form of radiation, that is placed inside the body to deliver radiation to the cancer cell site. When given in high doses, radiation kills or slows the growth of cancer cells. Radiation can be used to cure, stop or slow the growth of cancer cells.
