Abdomen X Rays – Imaging Center

PREP: On the day of your abdomen x-ray, wear something comfortable that you can change out of easily. Because metal and clothes can interfere with the accuracy of the radiograph, it is important that clothing and jewelry be removed from the area of the abdomen. A hospital gown will be provided. Prior to your exam, a radiologic technologist will explain the procedure and answer any questions you have. If you think you are pregnant, please tell the technologist before your exam.

PURPOSE: X-rays of the abdomen are ordered if a patient is experiencing abdominal pain or has experienced an injury to the abdominal area. Abdomen x-rays produce radiographic images of the kidneys, urinary bladder, and gas patterns of the bowel, including air fluid levels and/or free air.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Once inside the x-ray room you will be asked to lie down on an x-ray table or stand next to a wall unit, depending on the x-rays ordered by your physician. The technologist will search for anatomical landmarks to be sure that you re positioned properly. they will touch the sides of your pelvic bone and abdomen. You will be asked to hold your breath while a short exposure is made. Since any movement will blur the image, it is important for you not to move during the exposure. At this point, you will be asked to wait a few minutes until the x-ray films have been processed. If your x-rays are acceptable, you will be free to leave.

POST EXAM INFORMATION: Your x-rays will be given to a radiologist to review. A report on the results of your x-rays will be faxed to your physician. Your physician will discuss the results with you.
