Lithotripsy – Imaging Center
Lithotripsy or ESWL (extracorpeal shock wave lithotripsy) is scheduled through your physician and the operating room. They will inform you of the time to arrive at the admitting department. PREP: Your physician will instruct you on the prep needed. PURPOSE: Lithotripsy is a shockwave therapy used to treat kidney stones without invasive surgery. WHAT TO EXPECT: You will be positioned on a table that has a round plastic lens. You will lay on your back. Mineral oil and a water bag will be placed beneath your back. EKG leads will be placed. X-rays will be taken to confirm the location of the stone. When you are positioned so that the stone is in perfect position, anesthesia will be administered. A series of shock waves will be given to break up the stone. TIME FRAME: 1 – 2 hours plus recovery time. |
