PURPOSE: A stomach x-ray is a radiographic examination that produces x-ray images of your upper gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus and stomach.

WHAT TO EXPECT: After checking into the x-ray dept. you will be given a hospital gown to change into. You will be brought to an x-ray exam room and positioned on the x-ray table. You will be asked to drink some barium. You may also be asked to swallow some “fizzy” granules which produce gas in your stomach. During the procedure you will be asked to change positions frequently to allow for better visualization of your stomach. X-ray images will be taken.

POST EXAM INFORMATION: You will be given a stool softener. These tablets should be taken with food. You are also encouraged to increase your water intake for the remainder of the day. Your physician will discuss the results of this test with you.
