Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery
The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery is the most frequently performed bariatric sugery in the United States. It was first performed in 1967 and has been done laparoscopically since 1993.
Advantages

Disadvantages
- Cutting and stapling of stomach and bowel is required
- More operative & post-op complications
- Portion of digestive track is bypassed, reducing absorption of essential nutrients
- Nonadjustable, difficult to reverse
- Technically more complex
- Mortality rate approximately 0.5%
