Educational opportunities are also available for professionals in rural communities through telemedicine. The paramedic class is one of them that was implemented in January of 2000. The course is being offered by the St. Alexius EMS department to students in our rural sites. All of the students need to first apply for enrollment through St. Alexius’ education department and than be interviewed by the St. Alexius’ EMS staff to be accepted.

The paramedic course usually runs for 15 months. Classes are held Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. In addition to the classes, students are required to travel to Bismarck on weekend a month for hands-on-skills training. This way of delivering education to rural communities has allowed the students to save both money and time.
