Prior Learning Assessment
As a current Nationally Registered Paramedic you can receive credit for knowledge, skills and abilities gained through prior education and work experiences. Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) awards college credits for your past paramedic education as well as your current paramedic experience.

Earning Your AAS Degree
Students who wish to receive the AAS degree must successfully complete 60 credit hours, which includes 43 credits from the Paramedic Technology program and an additional 17 general education credits. Upon completion of the requirements, a paramedic certified by the National Registry of EMT’s will earn an Associate in Applied Science degree in Paramedic Technology from Bismarck State College

In addition to the 43 program credits, candidates must fulfill the following requirements to achieve the 60 credits needed for the AAS degree:

  • Communications – 6 credit hours
  • Arts & Humanities/Social/Behavioral Sciences – 3 credit hours
  • Business/Math/Science/Technology – 6 credit hours in two different disciplines
  • May be fulfilled by transferring credits, online or on campus
  • A minimum of 15 institutional credits, must be earned from BSC and must include the four capstone course credits from the program (ACLS, PALS, CPR inst. and PHTLS)

Cost:

  • Application fee to Bismarck State College is $35
  • $50 for each PLA credit
  • Remaining 6 credits are charged at current distance learning tuition
  • Remaining required credits will be either distance learning or on-campus tuition rates

Qualifications:

  • Current NREMT – Paramedic certification
  • Complete Bismarck State College admissions process (may be done online)
  • Submit official college transcript(s) – must be sent directly from college to BSC registrar
