Lent 2009 events at Jesuit Retreat House

Lent 2009
opportunities to deepen your prayer life

Lent is much more than a time of penance and sacrifice – it represents a vital opportunity to deepen our relationship with the God that loves us.  Lent gives us a great chance to strengthen our prayer lives, center ourselves, and find God in all things.

In this spirit, Jesuit Retreat House is offering an array of programs designed to help you pause, recall what is important, and get closer to God during this special time:

Lenten luncheons – March 16, March 30, & April 6
Come for great food and food for thought delivered by inspirational speakers from the Cleveland area.  Talks will focus on prayer and forgiveness.  Speakers and topics include the following:

  • Fr. John Libens, S.J., president of St. Ignatius High School, will talk about “Marketplace Management & Pathways to Prayer.”  His talk will draw upon the Ignatian Examen prayer as a way to manage one’s prayer life and stay in touch with God in an increasingly busy world.

  • Doris Donnelly, director of the Cardinal Suenens Center at John Carroll University, will talk about “Four Famous Conversion Stories.”  Her talk will focus upon the conversion experiences of Dorothy Day, C.S. Lewis, Thomas Merton, and Evelyn Underhill.

  • Regina Brett, award winning columnist of the Plain Dealer, will talk about “Forgiving Oneself Through Prayer.”  Regina’s talk will focus on how the lessons of Holy Week can show us how to be holy through the power of forgiveness. She will draw from the Gospels of Luke and John to show how to make your life a prayer. [Filled]

Women’s Lenten Retreat – March 20-22
This retreat considers the question of “What Can We Learn from the Women Who Were There?”  Robin Craig, of the Ignatian Spirituality Institute at John Carroll University, and Sr. Mary Ann Flannery, S.C., executive director of Jesuit Retreat House, will bring alive the challenge and holiness of the women who remained faithful to Jesus through his life, death, and resurrection.  The retreat will also relate the experience of these women to the forms of prayer we can practice today in the Ignatian tradition.  This retreat begins on Friday evening with supper at 6:00pm and ends Sunday morning with liturgy by 11am. The cost is $145.

Men’s Lenten Retreat – April 3-5
The church has always taught that Jesus possessed both a human as well as divine nature. Because of his humanity he knows our lived experience as a human being, and because of his divinity he offers us eternal life and salvation. How does Jesus express these two dimensions of who he is? We turn to the Gospels for our answer. This retreat will use them for our greater understanding and appreciation for our prayer life; and deepen our relationship with Jesus in prayer.  This retreat, directed by Carl Bonk, S.J., begins on Friday evening with supper at 6:00pm and ends Sunday morning with liturgy by 11am. The cost is $145.  REGISTER HERE
