NLD, Anxiety and Hallucinations

Hello, My 11 year old son was diagnosed with NLD and ADD several months ago. He is a bright little guy but definitely struggles in school. He feels overwhelmed at school and in life in general, which I think contributes to a great deal of stress and anxiety.
My most recent concern is that he has been experiencing panic attacks and anxiety which has expressed itself as hallucinations. He hears voices and sees “bad looking guys,” who are out to hurt him. I’m quite concerned particularly because he’s most afraid at night which impacts his sleep. This helps to create a cycle where he can’t function at school because of the fatigue. That results in more homework and more stress. It’s a vicious cycle. In addition, he says these voices are telling him he’s stupid and worthless and that he should hurt himself. Needless to say we are very worried.
We saw a psychiatrist and she diagnosed anxiety but does not think it’s related to NLD. I suspect it is.
She suggested he take an anti-psychotic drug which sounds very frightening given the potential risk for PERMANENT side effects!
Anyone out there have a similar experience with NLD and anxiety disorder with or without hallucinations? Any recommendations and advice will be very much appreciated. Thank you, Shelly
