The problem I have found relatively recently is that there are some academic issues with Rourke’s work. Much of his work seems to have been done with people who were already institutionalized, and they have all been one race, and the lind of NLD that we as parents families and students is so wide ranging that to call NLD white matter damage alone, and not in some cases a naturally occurring variation in brain structure is like saying all dyslexics have what matter damage on the left hemisphere of the brain. No doubt some who exhibit these tendencies DO have brain damage, but many do not. There simply isn’t enough study done on the syndrome to say if it’s genetic (though anecdotally many believe it is) and we have to wait for more wide-ranging research to be funded and done.
