: Dear Andrew,

: I am a college student, too. Having NLD and going to college can be stressful sometimes. Do your profs. know about your NLD? If they do, it may be possible to get some accomodations for not being able to read music. You should check with the Disabled Students Office on your campus. Do you have a good auditory memory? Maybe you can learn music that way.

: I am having a pretty tough semester in college, too, but in the past I’ve been doing really well. If you want to talk let me know. Good luck, and I hope things go better for you.

To Andrew;

I am too a university student in Australia who has non-verbal learning problems. Im not sure about the college and uni set up in the states, but in Queensland, Aus uni’s we have disability program. Unfortunately I am the only student on the program with Learning disabilities, most have physical, etc.

So the disability officer and myself, mainly by trail and error have come up with some exam and assign. modifications to ensure I have a equal opportunity to succeed, most importantly pass.

For example, I like to read the questions outloud, so they provide a exam room where I can do this, Because I take way longer to read, they provide extra time on the exam per hour; Sometimes I can do the exam verbally, that is get the exam read to me and verbally give the answers back.

Practically, I am not sure about learning to read music. The only thing I can suggest is, because of the similarities between structural components of learning music and learning math, numerical and the timing)finding out how individuals improve their math(reading formulas and their applications)abilities.

I know very little about this, except they break down the formulas into small little steps, learn the first step, then the second and third together and so forth. Im not sure if you can do this to reading music.
