Our 10-year-old 4th grader was slow on the uptake with math facts, which I couldn’t understand because he only has to see a word once to spell it correctly. It seems like these are both memory issues. He is now quite quick with the math facts, but is struggling with word problems, even when I break them down into steps. He understands the concepts, but can’t translate the words into a simple math problem. This is our biggest academic concern with him. I guess what I’m saying is that the math facts come eventually, and then you have to watch out for word problems. He works with a smaller group in math and although he feels stigmatized, he is near the top of that group, and he gets the one-on-one attention he needs.
