Mary,
If you are dissatisfied, for any reason, with the school’s evaluation of your daughter, you have the right to request (in writing) and INDEPENDENT EDUCATIONAL EVALUATION
: The school is in the process of testing our 11 yr old daughter for what they think might be ADD. We’ve also involved our pediatrician who’s started some testing of her own. The school has not completed their piece, but the pediatrician feels that whatever is wrong, it’s not ADD. She also mentioned that the Woodcock Johnson test that the school is using (achievement and cognitive) portions is not really the appropriate test to use – they should be using the WISC IIIR.

: The more I do my own research on the web, the more I feel she fits the NLD profile to a T. She talked early, but didn’t walk until she was 16 months. She read early and early on it was noted that she read well, but now in 6th grade, her reading comprehension skills just aren’t there. She has no reasoning for math, but she did memorize those basic facts. She has no coordination for sports (but plays piano well!). She has always had trouble making friends – and even in preschool it was noted that she tends to observe other kids playing, but just didn’t seem to know how to join in the game. But she’s very friendly and talkative, especially with adults.

: I’ve asked the Sped teacher about NLD – and she was like, yeah, I’ve heard about that. I was surprised at this point (they’re almost done with testing) no lights went on in her head. If they’re only looking for ADD, and they don’t find that, I’m afraid they’re going to come back to me and say there’s nothing wrong. My daughter already said the teacher testing her told her “I don’t know why your mother wants you tested, you seem fine to me.” I know the school has known for 5 years that somethings not quite right with her, but for the first 4 years (in the smaller elementary school setting) I was able to choose some great teachers who worked hard to accomodate her. In middle school, she has two different teachers for core subjects, plus a different teacher for specials (art, music) every semester. These teachers see so many kids, that it’s impossible for them to meet the needs of a specific student.

: I know something’s wrong and her classroom teachers want her to get some type of help, but I’m getting the feeling that the Sped dept. won’t look to hard for a diagnosis.
