I read something interesting on this once which said that while these kids can read, they have trouble visualizing. When you read a story, you visualize the setting and the action as you go along and that’s what brings it alive for you. If you are just reading the words, even though you understand them, it must be pretty tedious without that visual component. My son doesn’t really like to read either, although he does better with novelizations of things he’s seen on tv or in a movie, eg. a star wars novel.
